Do you or someone you know suffer from Migrains? Migraines and other types of headache — such as tension headache and sinus headache — are painful and can rob you of quality of life. They can come on when you least expect it. Migraine symptoms include a pounding headache, nausea, vomiting, and light sensitivity.
According to the Essential Oils Desk Reference, “The vast majority of migraine headaches may be due to colon congestion or poor digestion”. Let’s start from the inside and work our way out.
Cleanse First: It seems to be always the best place to start, no matter what the ailment. When we are not getting the proper nutrition, and especially when our digestive system is not working at optimum levels, nothing else can work correctly. Seems to be that most things at least begin to improve when we improve our body’s ability to absorb nutrients from healthy foods. The combination of ICP/Essentialzyme/Comfortone are most important for cleansing the colon”. All three of these are available in the Cleansing Trio Kit:
ICP™ helps keep your colon clean with an advanced mix of fibers that scour out residues. A healthy digestive system is important for the proper functioning of all other systems because it absorbs nutrients that are used throughout the body. ICP provides ingredients such as psyllium, oat bran, and flax and fennel seeds to form a combination of soluble and insoluble fibers. Enhanced with a special blend of essential oils, the fibers work to decrease the buildup of wastes, improve nutrient absorption, and help maintain a healthy heart. ICP provides three grams of soluble fiber and one gram of insoluble fiber per serving.
Essentialzyme™ is an advanced multi-enzyme complex that promotes digestion and assists in the assimilation of nutrients, and contains enzymes that support healthy pancreatic function.
ComforTone® (capsules) is an effective combination of herbs and essential oils that support the health of the digestive system by eliminating residues from the colon and enhancing its natural ability to function optimally. Because it supports normal peristalsis (the wave-like contractions that move food through the intestines), ComforTone is ideal for strengthening the system that delivers nutrients to the rest of the body. It also contains ingredients that are beneficial to liver, gall bladder, and stomach health.
The use of Young Living essential oils, to be applied topically for immediate relief of acute symptoms. You can use essential oils for migraines in several ways–applied to the skin, in candles, in diffusers, inhaled from a bottle, tissue, or piece of cotton, put in your bath water, or added to a hot or cold compresses. If you would like to use essential oils in your bath, add them undiluted to your bath water. Aromatherapy diffusers disperse the oils into the air in your room. Aromatherapy candles made with essential oils introduce the oils and fragrance into the air. You can learn to make your own candles, with pure essential oils, on YouTube or by searching “homemade candles”.
M-Grain is the very first recommendation in the essential oil desk reference for relief from migraine headaches. It is a blend of several pain-relieving and muscle relaxing ingredients: Basil (Ocimum basilicum), marjoram (Origanum majorana), lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), peppermint (Mentha piperita), Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) and helichrysum (Helichrysum italicum). M-Grain™ is calming while promoting a sense of well-being, particularly in the head and neck areas when applied topically. The majority of testimonials on Oil-Testimonials.com also praise M-Grain for its ability to bring almost immediate relief. M-grain for those extra powerful migraines. Nothing works faster than essential oils which can work directly on the brain and even down to a cellular level in the rest of the body.
Wintergreen oil is one of the top on the list of recommendations in the essential oil desk reference. Wintergreen has deep, muscle soothing abilities that can greatly reduce discomfort from the tension headache piece of the migraine puzzle.
Another great option is the use of the simple combination of Lavender and Peppermint. Peppermint is a vasoconstrictor, so it will take that pounding vascular constriction away by blocking the pain nerve recepors. Lavender is deeply relaxing, and may help to relieve the tension causing the headache or caused by the headache. These two essential oils make for a somewhat magical relief for tension headaches, and for some, can even relieve symptoms of migraine headaches too. I would suggest Lavender first to calm, then add Peppermint on top of the Lavender to help block the pain nerve receptors.
Cautions regarding aromatherapy for headache:
If you’re ready to try aromatherapy for headache, here are a few things to keep in mind:
1. Try to buy pure essential oils. The purer, the better. (We recommend using ONLY Young Living Pure Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils.)
2. If you’re taking other medications, watch out for any adverse effects and report them to your doctor. (Generally a good pure essential oil does not interact with prescription drugs)
3. Talk to your doctor first if you’re pregnant, epileptic, or if you’re sharing with a child. Aromatherapy is generally considered safe during pregnancy, especially after the first trimester, but your doctor may suggest certain oils or treatments to avoid.
4. Regarding the oil itself, it needs to be kept in a cool, dark place. If you’re buying an essential oil that has not been protected from light, think twice! They are usually sold in dark or opaque containers and boxes.
5. Keep trying! One oil may not make you feel better, or may even give you a slight headache, but that just means you could be detoxing or should try a different oil
